Our Curriculum’s Intent

At Mossbourne Parkside Academy (MPA), the curriculum is a powerful tool used to promote both a love of learning and willingness to explore. Our rigorous, creative and collaborative curriculum is broad, balanced and relevant, and meets the needs of all our pupils. We understand that every child has just one opportunity to learn at primary level and that, as a result, each child is entitled to a rich and deep curriculum that creates life chances. MPA encourages a love of learning and promotes resilience.  

The National Curriculum is the starting point for our pupils’ wide and varied learning experience and we are committed to developing the whole child. Our pupils will have the opportunity to be creative, physically active and academically challenged. To enable pupils to access our curriculum offer, reading and mathematics are priorities, while all national curriculum subjects are taught as discreet disciplines. 

 The curriculum will be continually reviewed to ensure it is fit for purpose, matches our context, is in line with our vision and ethos and meets the needs of our pupils. 

 Our curriculum is based on a combination of two approaches: ‘knowledge-engaged’ and ‘skills led’. We believe that knowledge underpins and enables the application of skills, although skills are often used as a vehicle to develop knowledge. The key life skills of resilience and perseverance are taught throughout and via the curriculum, rather than discretely.   

 The curriculum is designed to enable our pupils to become active members of society and to take an active part in Britain and in the wider world throughout their lives. Our curriculum aims to help our pupils develop an understanding of local, national and international perspectives as well as an awareness of what it means to be British. Ultimately, it is designed to help ensure our pupils to become lifelong learners. 

 The following factors have influenced the design of our curriculum:  

  1. The diverse international community of East London 
  2. Free School Meals (FSM): 43% of pupils are eligible for FSM 
  3. English as an Additional Language (EAL)63% of pupils 
  4. Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)21.2% of pupils have a SEND need (2.3% have an EHCP) 
  5. Age on entry: all pupils enter Reception below expected age (40-60 months) 

 The curriculum is structured to allow all staff, parents and pupils to have a clear understanding of the sequence of learning in addition to the expected skills and knowledge taught and learned within a specific year group. 

 For each year group, each national curriculum subject has a list of expected key constructs (knowledge and skills). The curriculum structure within each year group focuses on the expected stage of developing understanding, within a key construct. Guidance is provided to ensure teachers have the appropriate strategies to deepen pupils’ learning and to support pupils whose understanding is not yet at the expected depth.
